We Are Intramuros Episode 7: Mobility and Sustainability in the Walled City
There are several mobility options in Intramuros, but one stands out in terms of being safe, Clean Air Act-compliant and LTO-registered transport solution.
The Intramuros e-trikes plying the streets of the Walled City is a game-changer for its efficiency and high quality standard. An initial project of SoftBank, a Japanese-based telecommunications company and Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, the e-trikes were rolled out, equipped with Japan’s technology.
Compared to a regular e-trike, the Intramuros e-trike has a centralized tracking/monitoring system through a “cloud-driven technology” that loads and unloads passengers at a designated spot with time intervals.
Traversing the inner streets to explore the life in the Walled City is now easier and more personal, as these trikes can accommodate the needs of a tourist at a given time. Managed “on demand,” one can hop on and hop off and explore the historic district with less carbon footprint. The e-trikes are sustainable for the environment and helps the community to generate jobs for its Intramuros-based staff and drivers.
Valentino Mejia, one of the e-trike drivers who also lives in Intramuros has benefited from this transport system. Currently being managed MC Metro Transport, Inc., this viable transport even accepts Beep cards and offers special monthly rates for its passengers.
At present, we see a number of these blue e-trikes within the Walled City, serving the community and the tourists. It is more than just an additional transport system - it is aligned with the objective of the Intramuros Administration for an inclusive and livable city.
